I still provide great technical help on Civil 3D, Land Desktop, Map, and AutoCAD. You can find me at http://www.AdvSurvey.com
I spent the holidays on a Carnival Cruise to San Juan, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten. A very nice way to spend some free time learning about the history and culture of the islands, visiting some nice beaches and catching up on some reading while we were at sea.
Autodesk University (Nov. 26-30, Las Vegas) was better than ever this year. More sessions than ever before were recorded. If you missed a class you may be able to access the recording online. Visit the AU Web Site every so often to check for updates. The guest speaker William McDonough was a marvelous blend of wit and charm with a message of primary importance to all of us; changing the way we think and act (Cradle to Cradle) to make planet earth livable for eternity.
Brian Morse purchased Advanced Surveying Technology from Cesar Bradham a few months ago.
If you need Autodesk Software or Carlson Software check out Advanced Surveying Technology. I've kept things kind of quiet while I fine tune the game plan. The final outcome will be focused divisions for Surveying, Civil Engineering, GIS, and AutoCAD. Advanced Surveying Technology has hosted 2 Civil 3D Workshops and 1 Carlson Workshop over the past 6 months, all in the Orlando, FL area.
Yeah, I've been busy spongeing up Civil 3D knowledge. Civil 3D 2008 is the release to go to. I can finally say I recommend using Civil 3D 2008. If you are attempting to use a previous release of this product you will want to move to 2008. It works much better than any prior release, the features are more complete and therefore useable. After going back and forth between Land Desktop and Civil 3D I can truthfully tell you that many tasks are easier in Civil 3D. I will post more specific feature comparisons elsewhere on this site. You will probably need to get a better computer in order to run Civil 3D 2008 more efficiently. The program is very demanding on system resources.
I made a trip to New England a few weeks ago. I passed the ICE Certification Exam for Civil 3D after going through Autodesk's training program in Manchester, NH. I am now an Implementation Certified Expert. I attended a
Morse Society convention in Westport, MA.
An odd coincidence, I met the creator of the Softdesk Logo
at the convention. Morgan Murdough operates Morgan's Signs in Henniker, NH (former Softdesk HQ). Morgan told me all about the creation of the logo, the process and equipment he used, and the types of marketing pieces he created. I used an old vinyl Softdesk banner as a drop cloth on a recent painting project.
Another odd factoid I learned while attending the Morse Society convention, I am related to Lizzie Borden, acquitted for the infamous unsolved axe murders of 1892 in Fall River, Massachusetts. Her mother was Sarah Anthony Morse. I took a tour of the Lizzie Borden house (crime scene) at 92 Second Street. Members of the Morse Society were treated very well by the tour guides.
We use Excel quite often and for a wide variety of tasks. I've added an Excel section to the Tips page and included 2 useful tips. I won 4th place in the Top DAUG contest at the AUGI CAD Camp in Jacksonville. I walked away with some valuable insight into the business philosophy inherent in good CAD Management thanks to Robert Green. I've also been buried in the learning curve prospecting for more efficient tools and techniques. It's been a real myth buster.
Catch up with me at the FSMS Convention in Orlando, FL., August 17-19, 2006. Check out all the new DWF and DWG Viewers.
I'm back to getting real projects done and providing quality training experiences. I have also been preparing to launch an online store. You may have noticed a few other tweaks to this web site (hint: Tips). See if you can find the link to the new video clip from one of my training classes on ditches (hint: Instructor-led Training).

I completed the 180 mile bike trek across Maine. The scenery was spectacular. Take a look.

I came across this miniature stone castle while riding my bike around York Harbor, ME. |
AUGI CAD Camp in Tampa was awesome. I learned so many new tricks and techniques for AutoCAD 2007 and Civil 3D. I won 2nd Place in the Top DAUG contest!! There were about 150 or more attendees. I met a few new people and had a chance to catch up with some old friends.
I am excited to announce that I am participating in the American Lung Association of Maine's Trek Across Maine. We will bike 180 miles from the mountains of the Sunday River Ski Resort to the breathtaking coastline of Rockland, Maine. This event occurs June 16, 17, and 18, 2006.
I need your help. I have pledged to raise $450 to help the American Lung Association in its work to help protect and promote lung health. Your contribution will help bring greater attention to and fight the increasing air pollution in our area; help prevent lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, lung cancer, and tuberculosis; and help reduce tobacco use, which is responsible for 440,000 deaths in the U.S. each year. My cousin and uncle are among those victims.
Please click here to make a donation. Even the tiniest amount will make you feel a whole lot better. Thank you in advance for your support and generosity.
If you have been wondering what has taken me so long to update my journal I've been busy playing with my GPS. Well, that and a bunch of other things too. I've been doing design work on some very cool real estate development projects with engineers and surveyors. Support and Training has also been keeping me busy. Check out this new video on Creating 3' offset points for stakeout. It is under the Civil Design category on my Tips page Then there's that CUI thingy in AutoCAD 2006
