Shade Parcels with No Sewer Connection

You are asked, “Show me the parcels that DO NOT have a sewer connection.”  This article will show you how to answer this question using Autodesk Map. I will assume you already know a few of the basics of using Map; how to attach source drawings and how to define a query.  This solution assumes that parcels within 100' of the existing sewer line have a connection.

Source Drawings

Start with the following drawings:

A Buffer Analysis on the Sewer Line

Create a New drawing from scratch

Attach both source drawings.

Query in the sewer lines.

Create a Network Topology from the queried sewer line entities.

Create a 100' Buffer around the sewer lines by doing a buffer analysis on the topology.

Two Solutions

Create a new query.

Properties: LAYER = (parcel polygon layer)

Two solutions exist for getting the correct parcels by location.

The first solution is used when the buffer forms an island and the parcels you want to show are inside that island.

The second solution is used when the parcels are outside the 100' buffer and not inside an island formed by the buffer.

First Solution

AND Location: INSIDE POLYLINE POLYGON

(define by selecting the buffer polyline)

Preview the query.

Did the parcels show up on the correct side of the buffer polyline?

Second Solution

If the parcels did not show up on the correct side edit your query and delete the location statement.

Redefine the location statement to use:

AND NOT Location: CROSSING POLYLINE POLYGON

(define by selecting the same buffer polyline)

Use the Alter Properties features of the Define Query dialog to apply polyline width, hatch and color to the parcels.
